What is a Successful Misfit?

At some point in our lives, sometimes at work, sometimes at school or when we are children, we realize that we’re different and that being different is challenging.

Being a misfit can be positive. We need to learn how. With the right tools we can challenge the idea being a misfit equals being a loser!

Meet a Successful Misfit

Ellen DeGeneres started out as a stand-up comic. She had her own sitcom and then came out on her television show as a lesbian. At that time, she didn’t fit in to the TV network’s view of what a good show should be about nor did she match many viewers’ idea of what the star of a show should be like. Her show was canceled, she broke up with her girlfriend and disappeared—or so it seemed.

But she soon reappeared hosting award shows and then with her own talk show. In 2003, her show received 12 Daytime Emmy nominations, more than any other talk show in the history of the Daytime Emmys and received four Emmy Awards. As a misfit comic she fit right into daytime television promoting a negative-free zone as the theme for her show.
