Misfits

Misfits Are OK

Misfits are found everywhere in companies and organizations, and many of them, maybe most, are unsuccessful. At some point we realize that we’re different. Because of the pressure of society, we then make a huge leap. We decide that being different is bad. We decide that we should be like other people. We see pain in being a misfit and pleasure in fitting in.

We give up something we love, people we care about, or dreams we’ve treasured because someone tells us that being different is wrong. It is a strange and sad world where that has become the message. Many people evaluate themselves, find that they are different, and don’t like what they find. But we need to say "no" to changing and "yes" to being okay with being different. Acceptance is key.

Meet Someone Different

Being different is fine. In fact it is more than fine. It is fabulous. I recently saw Thomas Quasthoff sing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He is recognized as one of the finest bass-baritones in the world.

He also was a Thalidomide baby, resulting in stunted growth. He himself will say that he is different. The main thing that one notices in his performance is his joy and love of singing. He shines whether the music is Mahler or Miles Davis. He is more than fine. He is fabulous. Through his life he has been told that he is different and that he couldn’t do this or that. He learned to ignore this feedback.

Tell us how you’re different?
